What is Scrabble?

Scrabble is essentially a word game which can be played by 2-4 players at a given time on a board which comprises a grid of squares in a 15 X 15 format. The squares are assigned different scoring attributes. There are 100 tiles to draw from and players must draw 7 tiles initially and maintain the same number on their racks till they are exhausted. Each tile has a point value attached to it. If all 7 tiles are used in a word an additional 50 points is added to the players score. The goal is to win by scoring more than your opponent. Scrabble is now increasingly played competitively across several countries on the globe and in several languages.

Goa Scrabble Tournament 2016

Scrabblers in India are getting ready for another fun filled tournament this month in beautiful sunny Goa:

23-24 April 2016

Venue:

The A/c Conference room, Padre Conceisao College of Engineering, Verna, Goa.


Entrance Fee:

Rs.1500 for SAI members, Rs.1700 for non-members.
Fees cover lunch and;tea and snacks in themorning and afternoon. 


Schedule:

Registration: Sharp by 9.15 am on 25th April 2015. People who have registered in advance also need to register at the venue by 9.15 am. Participants arriving after that time will not be included in the draw, so participants are requested to have their transport arrangements in place to reach the venue on time.


Format:

15 games, last 5 rounds King of the Hill


Prizes:

Details will be announced at the venue, prizes will be given for the 1st-10th places.

Finally the much awaited Nationals is here. The event taking place over 3 days in Mumbai over the next week from May 29-may 31 holds particular significance as Scrabble Champions Tourney places are up for grabs. Here are the details:

WORDAHOLIX SCRABBLE LEAGUE all set for Take Off

The inaugral edition of the WORDAHOLIX SCRABBLE LEAGUE, India's unique scrabble league is all set for kick off in Mumbai between the 25 th and 28 th of this month. The one of a kind team competition organized in a competitive league format will initially have 4 teams having 7 scrabblers apiece. The teams have been constituted based on the India ratings of each player and will have equal competitive strength. There will be 24 rounds of competition in all. The teams are as follows:

Next Major Indian Scrabble Tournament-Goa Just Round the Corner

Scrabblers in India are getting ready for a fun filled tournament next weekend in beautiful sunny Goa. 

Venue:
The A/c Conference room, Padre Conceisao College of Engineering, Verna, Goa.

The Entrance Fee is Rs.1300 for SAI members, Rs.1500 for non-members.
Fees cover lunch and tea and snacks in the morning and afternoon.

You can have a total of 4 bingos.  Using the blank as a R we have Apricate (probability 4852) which means exposing to sunlight. Apricate takes S and D as back hooks.Using the blank as a T we get two words Apatetic (probability 13766) which means to inherit the same colour as the surroundings and Capitate (probability 13767) which means shaped like a head. Capitate takes only a D as a back hook.Using the blank as a H we have Hepatica (probability 14745) which is a perennial herb. Hepatica takes E, L and S as back hooks.

Those Handy Pyramid Words!

Pyramid words are words which start at 2 letters but can be extended to 7 letters and beyond. For example take the word loofahs, we start with lo, next we get to loo, followed by loof, loofa, loofah and loofahs. Thus by knowing loofahs we get to know a total of 6 words. Other examples include:
